Ice auger carb adjustments?

I know I'm going to sound stupid on this one....

Yesterday, I fired up my dad's ice auger for the first time this year. It took a long time to get it past the choking stage. Eventually, I was able to run it, albeit at half choke. I took it out last night and no problems.

This morning, I could only get it to start briefly, but not to run longer than 30 seconds. Any time I turn off the choke altogether, it dies. I took it home, messed with it, and can only get it to start if I pull out the air filter and splash a little fuel in that way. I can get it to run briefly at half choke, but it always dies.

I know my dad has messed with the jet and idle screws to some degree. Would it help if I reset these and start over or do I likely have a bigger problem? If so, how do I do this? I do not have an owners manual....is it like a chainsaw where you just screw them down tight and back off 1 full turn?

I want to go fishing tonight but all the small engine places are closed....and it's getting tough to move around much with a hand auger.

Be sure to post what the make and model is. I had something similiar, and received timely helpful assistance on here.

My bad...it's a Tecumsah Magnum 49cc III plus. I just went out and same thing...I have to pull out the filter and dump gas in that way. Runs for a moment and dies.

Have had that same auger since late 80's. Can't even imagine how many holes it's drilled in it's day... Anyway, had the same issue this week with mine. Usually do right away when I first start'er up for the season. 2 things to do (if you haven't). First, bring it inside to warm up..get some carb cleaner...pull the sides off (Diaphram)and the air filter...spray'em down good. Second, make sure you have new gas mixed and put Seafoam in it. May never have another problem... \:\)

Well....I took your advice, removed the diaphragm and air filter, dumped the old gas, cleaned the carb up. I used Sea Foam Deep Clean. The auger fired up, ran well for about a minute....even with the choke off for the first time. I shut it off, put the air filter port back on, fired it up again and it quickly revved up and seized! Now I can't do anything! What the heck happened? Could that be the jet misadjusted? Is there anything I can do now????? Crap.

Try this:
Turn the low-speed adjustment screw clockwise until it lightly seats. then turn screw counterclockwise 1 1/8 turn. then turn the high speed adjustment screw clockwise until it lightly seats. Then turn screw counterclockwise 5/8 to 3/4 turn. The low-speed screw should be on the left and the high speed screw is on the right and the high speed adjustment screw is larger in diameter than the low-speed adjustment screw.

Crappie Killer-Same issue I had. Before I went and messed up anything, I posted just before Christmas...its titled Jiffy Stealth STX

Here is a link that should give you your advice. Mine runs like a champ now....and cuts fast as heck.
