Malmo Bay fishing?

My step dad recently bought a cabin in Malmo bay, a hop from Cast Aways. He said I can use his boat anytime, a deep 16' with a 50hp Honda. Having never fished this pond I'm a little intimidated on where to begin. Is malmo worth it or am I better off heading to another area?

Any advice would be great! Thanks.

I think the Malmo area is pretty popular in the spring, not so much in the middle of the summer though. Most people head out to the mud this time of year. That's not to say you can't find fish elsewhere.

Don't be intimated by the size, with the exception of the mud flats - about 7 mile boat ride from Malmo, everything you need is right there, sand, rocks, weeds and the transition areas. Just start learning what you have near you, right now lot's of people are using planer boards right in front of your cabin or go out to 27 foot and start trolling with leadcore, I know lots of guys who do well in that area and never go very far.

The sand bite up there is probably the most popular spot to fish in the spring but what a lot of people don't know is that is always kicks back up about this time in the late summer. That is where I will be trolling crankbaits this weekend.

I have a place at Fishers and was up last weekend. I fish out of a small 16' boat with 25hp, so I don't travel too far from home. I was able to pick up 2 - 25" in 1.5 hours Friday night, and a 21" and 23" on Saturday between 10-12, I could not get them to bite in the afternoon. I was marking a good amount of fish in the 26' range up in the sand of the Malmo area during the day Saturday. I could have used another guy or two in the boat to really figure out what they wanted. Ran leadcore the whole time.

Heading back up this weekend.
