After all the rain lately, the water level on Gull is as high as I have ever seen. We pulled our small fishing boat off its lift because it was only a few inches out of the water. A big wind and waves can take even a good sized boat off it's lift. Also when the docks are so close to the water the wind and waves can rip them apart. I've seen some evidence of this already. Take care.

Agreed. I spent a few hours yesterday raising our dock at least 8 inches (it's 6' wide) and the boats coming through the channel were washing away some of the sections of folks docks. Ours was flopping in the waves so I figured I better get it up a bit. While I was out there doing it, I watched sections of docks with chairs on them floating by along with bogs from Margaret, some the size of small cars. Our neighbors pontoon floated away Sunday night, right off his lift, and we found it yesterday morning down in Booming Out Bay. It made it through the bridge at Zorbaz, all the way down past Bar Harbor and out into the bay.

Which way does the current typically flow? To the south end of Gull? We're on the channel between Gull and Margaret, and I don't recall.....

Anyone know if the dam on the end of Gull is open and flowing? Just wondering what to expect the next few days.

Be safe out there!

Just an FYI-I found this article online:

Gull Lake reservoir at near record level
Posted: May 28, 2012 - 4:00pm

By U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Due to the recent rainfall, Gull Lake rose nearly 1 foot from the normal summer operating level yesterday, May 27.

The site has received 7.71 inches of precipitation since May 19. Nearly 3 inches of rain was recorded yesterday (Sunday, May 27). The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the reservoir, pulled the stop logs and fully opened all gates to the lake at the dam.

Property owners should take caution to move any boat lifts, docks, etc., to higher ground. In addition, channels between lakes will have swift currents, and boaters should exercise caution when approaching and proceeding through. Corps staff will continue to monitor the situation on the reservoir and in the river, both upstream and downstream.

I'm not sure if that means water is flowing into the lake or out of the lake though......

Drove down to the dam this morning and they have all but one of the gates open:

If you have a boat on a lift or tied up to a dock any where and have not checked it for a week or so. I would plan on a trip this weekend to check it or call up a neighbor on the lake to check it for you. When I left Edwards last Monday a few boats on lifts were very close to floating and it was still raining. Add some wind and waves and she could be down the lake or getting banged up pretty good in the lift. frown

Yeah, even our little lake with an inlet on one end and a dam on the other was about as high as I have seen it in 12 years, and we usually stay the same the whole year, or drop just a bit in the fall. My dock which is low anyway was about 2-3 inches from the top to the water at best.
