With the threat of a government shut down does that mean every state operated camp ground will be closed or just "unmaned" for the season? I'm sure the National parks like Norway will not be effected but just wondering what others know?

thanks,

That is going to suck for those who have reservations. And cut way down on the available campsites in some areas, North Shore of Lake Superior comes to mind with all the state parks there.

Should go to an all volunteer system in the parks. Well not all but more positions could be done by volunteers.

that is the problem as far as i'm concerned, the people who have reservations and the families who want to go and enjoy the state parks that we have. i'm sure they will get their money back or credit for future dates but that's not a big help when your vacation is already set. our public officials should not get paid once the session ends. they have a job to do just like everyone else and should get it done in the time they have scheduled. i think they will get everthing ironed out prior to the shutdown date. however these political battles put a damper on the excitement of going on vacation with your loved ones. good luck.

I am not sure what this will do but I do know that in the last round of budget cuts there were state and county campgrounds that were shut down. They were still usable but were unserviced.

What a interesting concept. WE THE TAXPAYERs OWN the land and yet WE are locked out. I have GOT to get a job being a beauracrat. Tick off the taxpayers, get cought in affairs, alcohol/drug scandals and list goes on and on. And yet come Nov. we'll elect them all over again. So how would they stop people from using "hike/backpack sites? Or hiking trails, or bike paths.

Please, keep the political editorializing to the "Outdoor Discussion" forums please. I think this question is a valid one and provides some important info.

I for one would hope that a compromise could be made on the state parks, but it seems unlikely that they would allow the parks to be open without staffing despite the fact they do it in the winter.

I saw a website mentioned on the news or in the paper that is supposed to explain shutdown details but I'm not having any luck locating it. I'll keep looking.

Sorry that it got moved but eitherway I think it's an importante message or post for people to be aware that there summer camping plans may come to a screaching hault if they're not aware of the shut down possibilities.

If it comes to that they ought to make an exception for the state parks. With the reservation refunds it would cost more money to close them down than it would to keep them open and staffed.

The best way to have big bucks is not to shoot that big buck.

I e-mailed my State rep and here is his reply in regards to the budget and the parks.

IF there is a government shutdown then the state parks will be closed for business.

They all best sit down and work this all out.

Noone can have it all thier way.

I typically vote Democrat and I did vote for Dayton but it sure seems from the e-mails I recieve from reps that the repub's have tried hard to settle this and it also seems Mr dayton wants it all his way.

Looks like I made a mistake on my Governer vote.

You may believe the grass is greener on the other side. If you take the time to water yours, it would be just as green.

With all of the time they have had to work something out, there is no excuse for a shutdown. My voting will be much easier in the future.

Unless the Repub's give in all the way, Ol Dayton I do not believe will move an inch.

My unkle is a part ranger in the Duluth area. We talked this weekend. Parks will be closed, but he reminded me of the last time the state did this. They spent two weeks getting the park ready to be closed down, and then the day before July4th weekend (Or something like that) the state resolved the problem and said "We saved the day, go enjoy your weekend" Well, what they don't realize is all the preparations just to "shut down" a park.

Silly waste of tax payers money...You might find me crossing into a state park to access the minnesota river if they do shut down.

yep. The state has already spent a lot of money in preparing for a potential shut down.

this is going to cost our state a lot of money. Good thing we aren't running a deficit or anything.

I think both sides have dug in their heels. I am not a huge Dayton supporter but I seem to recall reading that he was the one willing to compromise here. Politicians on both sides are forgetting about their constituents.

I have a reservation scheduled months ago for Zippel Bay state park on July 2. If they don't get this figured out soon, I better not be charged a cancellation fee for wanting to make sure I have a place to stay before driving 6+ hours....

I still blame this on all politicians in office right now, at least that hold state positions.

I mean, we had a dfl house and senate and GOP governor and we ended up here in 2005, and close to it most other years.

Not sure why we expect anything different.

Elected officials voting for the party instead of the people, that's how we got to this point.

Both sides have said they are willing to compromise. The Republicans keep increasing their budget but are not willing to raise any funds for those increases. Dayton has cut down what he has proposed to spend and raise by half already. It seems to me like they are all just a bunch of babies who should be locked away in a room with nothing until they get a budget punched out (similar to the process of the selecting a pope or papal conclave).

You can add Conservation Officers, State Patrol, all DNR, MPCA, anything with "State" attached to it, to the list of CLOSED.

Wonder how ravaged our fisheries will become?

I think that critical services (law enforcement, jails, prisons, etc) keep operating in a shut down.
Back to campgrounds for just little bit. This has been an interesting Topic to follow and I have been waiting for one thing to come up concerning the possibility of State campgrounds closing and options if that happens. Private/family run campgrounds or resorts. I think this Topic has been a good example of why there are fewer and fewer private campgrounds. Nobody has even mentioned staying at a private campground/resort instead. Private businessís already have a very difficult time trying to compete with the State campgrounds as a private business has to at least break even financially to stay open while a State campground can spend an almost unlimited amount of money with no concern of the cash flow coming in as any business loss is covered by the taxpayers. That leads to a vicious circle because as the private businessís are put out of business they quit paying taxes as do the former employees of those businessís so there is less money flowing into the State to do things like run campgrounds. Could we be heading for a time MN only has State run campgrounds but the State does not have enough money to run them?
