Anyone been fishing up their recently? I am a Horseshoe chain newbie and was thinking of coming up one day this weekend to see if I could possibly locate/catch a few fish. How is the catfish, walleye, bass, pike, and panfish bite? I don't need/want specific spots, but tips on depths, presentations, etc. would be very helpful.

I was out there Sat. and Sun. Water temps were around 60 in the main lake areas and a bit warmer in the river. The walleye bite has been ok since opener but lots of 11-13 in. fish and a few bigger ones mixed in. The walleyes are starting to move out of the river and onto the main lake structure. I found pitching jigs with a half a night crawler to be very efective some days and trolling shad raps works good other days so you have to let the fish tell you what they want.

The gills and crappies have been in and out of the shallow bays for a few weeks. I have been trying to nail down a good patern but it's been a challenge this spring. The gills I caught Sat were not spawned out yet but the crappies were about done with the spawn.

The cats I have been finding have been in the holes of the river sections. I have hade some luck up river from the 22 access. There are a few decent holes within a mile or so of the public launch. I have found crawlers to be working better than the liver or cut bait right now. You will need 2-4oz no roll sinkers if you try for cats in the river as it's high and moving fast.

Are you finding much for cats in the actual lake(s), or mainly the river? If they are in the river, is there a lot of rocks/shallow areas to worry about in that area? Any time of day better for panfish, walleyes, and catfish? It sounds like today is going to be the day to get up there, and it sounds like the winds will be decent for tomorrow.

Found plenty of cats in the lake today. Not a lot of size to any I caught, Probably had the most consistency around the 18-22 FOW mark. Small jigs and Fatheads(left the crawlers in the truck and came back to a smelly surprise). Walleyes 15-ish FOW all were shakers. Tomorrow should be a great day to be on the water, aw heck anything would be better than work.
Good luck

Will fish for food.

Cats are in both the river and lakes. While there are rocks in the river, shallow can be more of a problem. Water is pretty high right now though and if you stay away from the edges you will not have an issue. This actually can apply to a lot of the areas on the east side in general. If you are in an unknown area outside of the main channels , just go slow and keep watching your depth finder.

Like pushbutton said they are in both the river and the lake sections. I have found the ones in the river to be of a bit better size right now.

Went up to the chain of lakes today. Did not do very good at all during the day, but at about 5:45 tonight the fish seemed to have turned on. Ended up catching 3 dink walleyes, 1 15.5 inch walleye, a small smallmouth, and 6 catfish (most were on the small side, but did get one decent one) until about 8:30 until we left. We caught all fish on nightcrawlers on the bottom in about 9 FOW. Also had about 2 dozen nightcrawlers bit off, but no fish were hooked. All in all, a pretty decent first trip up to the Horseshoe Chain of lakes, and we will be back hopefully a few times yet this year.

Was up there on the weekend of May 28th. Friend's cabin. He said there was only catfish in the lake... Checked DNR lakefinder and determined that wasn't the case. Brought my bag of tricks and caught several nice northerns, some nice cats at night, some nice largemouth bass and... a 7.5 lb, 28" walleye. Needless to say the cabin owners were pleasantly shocked. Awesome place.

Are the fish still biting in the same areas as last weekend? Considering going back to the chain, Mille Lacs, or maybe some small Wright/Sherburne County lakes.

The bite has slowed some since the cold front. I made it out yest for a bit and while the fish were still on the graph they were not feeding hard and the bites I got were light. I suspect by Sat or Sun things should start to pick back up grin.

Well since there hasn't been a report in a while I thought I might post one. I am new to the area, actually new to Minnesota, so I haven't quite mastered fishing The Chain or Minnesota fishin in general. On the other hand I make it out 2-3 times a week, so take this report for whats its worth.

Since the high water fishing has been tough. I picked up a few walleyes and cats trolling the mouths of tributaries, mainly the river, but they are far and few between. Mostly been trolling shallow in the evenings. Also seeing quite a few fish deep but can't get them to take anything. Hopefully things will settle down and I can figure something out.

Surface temp is in the low 80's and there is a lot of current in the pinch points especially under the 22 bridge. If you can get the boat in the water the fishing is nice and peaceful with the no wake, but the catching seems to be as equally peaceful.....

Did some bobber fishing off the dock last evening and caught some nice hand size sunnies in 4-6 feet of water using wax worms. Others around the lake have also been catching nice size sunnies using worms, so I imagine they could be caught in most parts of the lakes at this time.

Just before dark caught 2 cats in the 3-5lb range using nightcrawlers in 12 feet of water. Would of stayed out but didn't feel like fighting the mosquitoes.

Lake is dropping slowly and is probably down 6-12 inches from the high. Hoping fishing will be good this week!

Crappie bite seems to be picking up. Limited out in about 3 hours casting bbc and john deere colored grubs in 14-16 feet of water. A couple of nice ones but mostly average.

Fished Horseshoe yesterday w/ da wife.....Gotta love that girl, our anniversary and she wanted to go fishing. And she toughed it out thru the downpours.
Anywho, Got her onto a great mixed bag.....several cats, 2 nice eater Walleyes, some northerns and sunnies. The cats were everywhere we went, but the rest took covering some ground.
Dang lady out fished me smirk

Fished yesterday in the wind and didn't do great but did manage a 20" and 18" walleye trolling with leadline in 20+ feet. Was the first fish I have ever caught using leadline so it was nice to get some confidence with it. Water temp is 61-62 degrees.

On a different note, I was fishing during the middle of the day casting a chatterbait into the weeds and I hook this 24" cat. It had this large red spot near its mouth, any ideas on what it is?

Yes they are active and catchable all year round. The lakes haven't turned over yet so you will still be finding the bulk of them in under 20 feet of water. Cut suckers or chicken liver under a float will do the trick.

I have only fished the chain for a year but no matter what I fish for, crappie, northern, bass and especially walleye, I catch catfish. I would venture to say I have never seen a more productive catfish waterway.

fatheads have been working trolling and slip bobber.
