Had the 18 and loved it. Now went to the 55. Its a great rig.

There once was a time I thought I was wrong . But then found out I was only mistaken.

For me is because it is not a Vexilar. I like to be a little different and not have the same as everyone else. That is why I own an AMC Javelin. To be different. But it is personal preference. Go to the store a decide what you like best because either that you buy will do the trick.

If you gonna drop that kind of dough, may as well look and compare a 3 top models from each company. Vex FL20, Marcum LX5, HB ICE55.

Its going to depend on your preference. For me its was the super fine line of the Marcum. I will switch back and forth between my ICE55 and Marcum. But when I am on top a school of fish or trying to locate them I will put away the bird and turn on the fine line feature of my Marcum. Im not a blob person.

But as anyone will say they anyone of the units will help you catch fish.

1st. the auto digi depth for when you are working fast structure. 2nd. better bottom seperation. 3rd. change in color scheme. But in the end it all comes back with what you like.

Just got my Humminbird ICE 55 a couple weeks ago. So far, I love it. I haven't played with all of the settings yet but so far i've been able to zoom in on the fish near my bait. It's been great. I've never used the Vex FL20 but really enjoy the quietness of the humminbird so far!

Seperation on the 20 is 2.68", Seperation on the 55 is 2.50" not much difference. LX-5 with SFL on it gives you 3/4" sepration, big difference.

I've used both, and there was nothing the 55 had that would make me want to switch. When I had my FL-20 (I now have a fl-22), you get some great features: 6 and 12' bottom zoom, low power mode (which I use more times than I can count), and the night mode which is great for not only night fishing but also overcast days.

Drewski...try this once with your new Vexilar FL-22HD..set 3 split shots 1/2" apart on your FL-22HD.

And tell me at what gain and mode you can read them clearly and specifically. (Test all 3 ducer beams too)

My bet is set at 10% to 20% gain and in both full and zoom modes you will easily see them clearly separated at 1/2"...give it a test once.

Then move them even closer, and try it again in 8 degree beam mode.

wink

I've got all Humminbird electronics in the boat, but LOVE my FL20. I absolutely love it. If you're on the fence on two great products, it's always nice to support a MN company!

I have both the LX5 and a Ice55. I find that I probably use my ice55 more than the LX5. I have not used the 20 or Vex 22 so I cannot speak about them at all.

I am sure the Vexilar units will also catch you fish.

They all have their benefits and will all get the job done.

You may believe the grass is greener on the other side. If you take the time to water yours, it would be just as green.

I love these conversations on electronics. I too am of the opinion that all will help you catch fish. I have a FL-18 and a 55. Can catch fish with either. I fish with a group of guys that have everything from FL-8s to LX-5s and I have my 55. The guy that ALWAYS outfishes has the FL-8. Just goes to show you that electronics are great but it takes more than that to land fish. Buy a flasher you can afford and like and learn how to use it. Presentation and technique are far more important than what flasher you have.

Interesting note on the 55..used it for the first time last week. Actually got interference from nearby auger noise. Screen lit up like a christmas tree. Anybody else ever see this with the 55 or any other flasheer? I guess the frquency was just right to cause interference. Never had that happen before.

Yeah, I've gotten small bits of interference 3 times now on my 45. Once was with 3 flashers around though. The other was with Marcum's.

I have the Bird 55 as well. Was using it yesterday and a snowmobile pulled up and I had some interference until they left. I went from an old Fl-8 to the 55 so far I love it. I'm starting to be able to tell the differance in the size of the fish with it. Small saugers can still sneak in on the bottom without me seeing them though.

Marcum line seperation shmeperation. I can easily dial my 20 in to any water depth to acheive a more than desirable view and seperation.

i watched a couple of vidoes on net on the ice55 and am wondering if the screen flashes n blinks as bad in real life as the vidoes make it look. my old fl8 doenst even flash as bad as the ice 55 if it really does blink like that.

They don't blink like that when viewing live in person. The flashers are blinking in the videos because the flasher's refresh is syncing with the video frame exposure. Human vision isn't recorded discretely, we have a hysteresis in our picture formation.

I wouldn't be caught without my ICE 55....through the ice or for open water winter fishing. I could go on and on about its features....digital depth display, dual beam capabilities, industry's only 6 color palette....but the best part about it is that it just plain works.

Here's what the ICE 55 did for me this past week at Red Wing. $55 rebate until the 1st of the year!

Personally I'd save a few bucks and go with the ice 45. Unless $$ isn't a problem and you want the couple extra bells whistle and 6 colors... I love my 45 and "had" been a vexhead for a long time. Just my opinion...Have also been at tourneys along with fishing next to every other flasher around and have yet to get ANY interference...

I bought the Humminbird Ice 45 last winter. The unit gives me interference next to every make, the digital display will often read 1.2 feet deep when I am in deep water, and at times the digital display will tell me the depth is where my jig is. I sent it in at the end of last season and they sent it back and said it was fixed. Been out this year and having the same issues. It kinda made me wonder if they even did anything to it or tested it before they sent it back. I like the birds features but with the issues I've had I am bummed I didn't drop the extra doe and go with the FL-20.

I used to have an FL-8 but I upgraded to the ICE35. I am sure glad I did too. Having the zoom and the dual beam transducer on an entry level flasher is awesome.

Question for you guys that own the diff. brands, what would be the better one for me to use as its hard for me to see the color as I'm color blind. I grew up with Fl8 and Lowrance flashers and graphs in my dads boats over the years and I use a H-bird Piranhamax 150 in my boat. But when I use my friends fl8 its hard to tell what the colors are and it makes it hard to fish productively. Any brands out there that are easier to tell between the colors? If not I'll stay with my camera at least on that I can see the fish.

I also deal with color perception concerns and gratefully Vexilar has an answer for this issue.

One can get nearly all* FL Series Vexilar units converted by the Vexilar shop to a new scheme of lighting called the "Cool Blue" conversion system. This conversion process changes the colors in the display so it is Color Blindness friendly.

The bright red color stays the same, but green and orange are replaced with vibrate Blue and Purple. I often see a shade or two of Pink mixed in there somewhere too at times, but that me.

The change is significant and you will intermediately be able to see the contrasts and use the Vexilar flasher as other can with top efficiency. If you live with CB issues, I highly recommend it.

You can call Vexilar and speak with a Vex tech on the system, and what your options are to get one. You can get a new Vexilar fitted with it, or get a reconditioned one from them also fitted with the "Cool Blue" at a very reasonable cost.

CB Conversion cost is $59.00, plus $10.00 S/H.

Included in this fee is the conversion and a complete unit check-up. They will look your entire system over to find any potential problems like worn brushes, circuit problems, or a weak transducer. Thanks Ed that really helps out a lot but one question do any other brands do to be C.B. friendly as well?

The ICE-55 offers a 6 color palette. I can't say how it will appear to someone that suffers from color blindness, but here are the choices:

Awesome flasher. You won't regret it even though the vex is a great flasher the bird is even better in my opinion.

I have had the Lowrance X67c and the Marcum LX3-tc and so far my new Ice-55 is far superior. It seems to be more consistant in reading my jig. The target seperation seems to be pretty good. I would say just as good if not better than my Marcum. Unit is nice and quiet and the battery seems to last pretty long. I have used it for 8 hours and it still showed 75% battery left. Its more fun to look at and you dont have to squint to see the targets. The night backlighting is awsome. My brother in law has a LX5 and he says he might switch to hummingbird.
All in all a great unit.
