Who uses a wood stove to heat their fish house? Home made or factory made?

Been there, done that, not interested in going back.

While wood heat is inexpensive, it was always a struggle to modulate the temperature. It was either hotter than the dickens or the fire was out. Problem is with a little stove, it's hard to keep a small fire going. The bigger the stove, the easier it is, but then the ice house gets too hot.

I wish. How nice would it be to listen to the crackle all afternoon long.... and the smell.... Gives me warm thoughts.

But hydro is right. pain to regulate. gotta have good wood available and always haul it out there.

I have a factory made stove and the pipe just was modified to make it a bit longer and go up through the ceiling. It works great!! As previously stated yes it is a bugger once in a while to regulate the heat but that's why there is windows and a door on the house. I can get a piece of wood about the size of a 1 lb brick in the stove so it burns for a little while depending on the type of wood. Its not difficult at all for cutting up scraps around the shed to burn and a medium sized box will last me a good week or two going every day. A little newspaper and small pieces of wood to getter going and in 10 minutes the windows are clear and the fish are bitin!

You need a stove that is air tight so you can regulate the air flow and a damper in the stove pipe. You also need to use wood that is cut and dried for consistency. Once you have a bed of coals it is easier to regulate. Nothing beats wood heat in a fish house.

Loved it in the spear shack years ago.

Nothing like burning little chunks of wood and corn cobs! Ahhhh...

We use a home-made stove that's probably 10" high x 10" deep x 15 inches wide. Just welded together some steel and slapped on a door, vents, and some legs.

Yeah, it gets fairly warm, but we can spear in t-shirts then.

It's a convenience vs romance deal. I've never owned a permie, but have burned wood in lots of friends' permies, and have burned wood for heat at home for many years.

If I had a permie, I'd have a small woodstove for sure. Once you get the hang of woodburning, you can regulate temp OK, even with a small stove in a small space. Nothing like the snap, crackle and pop of a nice lil fire. Pretty glow, woodsmoke smell. . . . not to mention it's nice to put a pot of vennie stew on top of the stove to simmer. Mmmmmm.

But that's a half day deal at least. I'd bring a Big Buddy along for those times when I only had an hour or two for the evening bite and wanted quick heat with absolutely no hassle.

Best of both worlds. Why not? smile

Thumbs up for the little wood stove. Like anything else if you do it long enough you get good at it, Regulating the heat never seems to be that big of a problem and when the fish ain't biting ya always have something to do. Great way to get rid of scrap wood and if you do any woodworking like I do then you always seem to have a supply laying around. Keeping a coffee pot warm or some stew or chili is an added benefit. Some times the old ways still work best just like we don't use any of them new cameras that you dip in the lake, we just cut a bigger hole and dunk your head in for a look see!!

GO find it Bud, Find It!

I have one in my house and wouldn't have it any other way. Hauling wood is a hassle but it is great for cooking a meal. And as long as you have a supply of wood it beats paying to fill the lp tank.

I have a small barrel woodstove in my perm and my gf's dad has a homemade woodburner in his wheelhouse, nothin more fun than stoking it up on the way to the lake and watching smoke roll out of the chimney onto cars behind us. Great way to heat fish house in my opinion
