I have honestly probably only seen one fishhouse ever on that lake in the 30 years I have lived in Elk River......I would guess they stocked the crappies after they drained it a few years ago but even in the summer the fishing pressure is very limited.....I am not saying there aren't any fish to catch though but it is not fished very much and usually for a reason.......if you give it a shot let us know what you find!!

I havent ever seen anyone out there in the winter. Probably not worth it to try, low populations of game fish, but you never know.

I might try it next week or at least drill some holes and stick the vex down and look around. Not that you can always go by them but the dnr lake reports do not look too bad!!!! It is too close to pass up...

The local JC's used to have a small tourny on Orono back in the late 80's. I fished it three years in a row and no one caught any fish. The contest was stright across from the beach, just outside the channel area.

I have heard of crappies and walleyes being caught on the north side basin out from the bridge. This was open water time. I also know the ice is thin close to the bridge. I had a friend who had a grandpa who owned a house on the lake. He always went to another lake with his darkhouse grin

Good luck.

I have fished it once during the summer. I put in about four hours and only managed one 14 inch smallmouth. I know someone that lives on the lake and supposedly they catch some panfish off their dock but nothing to brag about. During summer there is always people fishing underneath the bridge on HWY 10. Not sure what they catch....the part of the lake north of 10 is VERY shallow.

Watch the channel and neck down areas, there is current in that lake due to the river running through it. It also has a nick name of Urinal.... so you might want to watch what you eat out of there!

I grew up in Elk River and there were times that we would get very nice crappies in the winter, also very nice northerns in there also. This was back in the 80's and 90's before they drained it and I haven't fished it since. There are a few walleyes and some that are big but they are few and far between. There isn't much for structure, just fish the river channel and be careful since there is moving water. I have also caught fish out from the dam but you have to use extreme caution in that area. It's worth a try, we used to see a few crappies up to 15" but generally they were between 8 and 12. Good luck.

I would definitely limit what you eat out of Orono. In the summer they have signs at the beach warning that you will get sick if you swallow water and theat swimming is not recommended...AT THE BEACH. They also have a nice fishing pier(that I have NEVER seen anyone fishing on)

I think the only time I see boats on the lake is for the fourth of july to watch fireworks..look for somewhere better. Big Lake or Mitchell would be a better bet if you want to stay close

Diapers and politicians both need to be changed frequently, and for the same reason.

Fished Orono a couple times during open water season... Usually can get a few Smallies per trip, nothing big but they are fun to catch and its fun fishing a when you have it to yourself! smile

It is 19 feet deep under the highway 10 bridge. Last summer I dropped the boat in for a couple hours and caught 6 walleyes, around 15 Crappies, 3 smallmouth, 2 pike, 4 rockbass, a perch, and 3 sunnies. Not bad for a two hour outing minutes from home.

Best of Luck,
UJ

I grew up in Elk River. My wife and I purchased our first home on the lake. Nickname for the lake "Lake Urinal" They used to have the bald Eagle Water Skiing Show on the Lake, but from the ankles down you could not see anything!

united jigsticker are you around anymore?

I always go over this lake and want to try it. I'll try not to pee my pants this time so the lake doesn't get any worse.
