I believe you can as long as you have a portable fire pit that keeps the ashes & coals contained. A fire directly on the ice is considered littering.

We have a big bonfire directly on the ice each winter on Minnetonka. I was pretty sure that it was fine.

It is illegal to burn directly on the ice. You must keep the fire contained and remove all debris when you leave.

A old metal garbage can lid works pretty good for that.

If your looking for a more portable heat supply just for your self, use a three pound coffee can and fill it about half full(or more) of charcoal and set it right between your legs while sitting on your bucket fishing. it gives lots of heat for hours, when out in open fishing.

I think I have a problem with low self esteem, because I'm way better looking than I think I am.

Winter is the best time of year, its for dreaming and planning all the things you wont quite get to.

thx for the replies. i use the fire when i have people over. there is No Smoking in the shack. also i get a few to many people at the shack, so the fire is a nice way to increase a comfortable ice fishing area. tends to become the bar on the lake!

a few fires on the ice probably doesn't make much of a difference, but adding wood ash to the lake isn't a whole lot different than fertilizer run-off.

I love the fire on the ice, it just seems so crazy, fire and ice.
Good points though, make sure you clean up your mess. Use the can lid or something too. But hey i wont tell.

Back in high school we used to have a nice bonfire going, set up tip ups all over and play boot hockey on a shoveled off rink area. Man that was fun. Everyone racing over to get the tip ups when they went off.

I love the way some people follow the law selectively. There are plenty of threads here full of righteous indignation badmouthing people who litter, poach, waste fish on the ice, crowd your spot, etc. But some of you seem to act like it's cute to have a fire on the ice.

If you break the law, you're a law-breaker, and I hope someone calls you in to the DNR.

I think most people said that you need to use a can or have the fire in something. Im just not going to turn someone in for this offense.

Hey blackdog ever go 35mph in a 30mph. If so i guess you are just as much a lawbreaker as the rest.

I admit that I didn't know that a direct fire on the ice was wrong. When we have our big ice fishing day in a few weeks, we already talked about having it in a fire pit. That's the beauty of these forums, the education. The other beauty is seeing how people react to stuff!

I'm building a fire pit for spring crappie fishing. Cutting the bottom off an old 300 gal. fuel tank and welding skis on it to pull behind the four wheeler. Nice big fire, and pull the mess back to shore with me.

back in the 40's- 50's when I was a kid on Sunday afternoons there usually a fire going somewhere ON the ice. Didn't matter if you were with the party or not we would take marshmallows, weiners, and even potatoes and cook em over a fire. Was a pretty nice social gathering. No one got snotty if ya just walked over and warmed your hands or shot the breeze. I guess the residue could be an issue now-a-days.

Kinda like the "Hockey rink" thread? That one went astray.
(It wasn't my fault)and there have been others, Can't we ALL just play along.......
