SHAKOPEE -- Shakopee firefighters rescued a man who was clinging to a ledge of ice in the Minnesota River Sunday afternoon.

Fire Chief Rick Komen says they were called to Memorial Park after a man had fallen through the ice into the water.

Komen says the man was holding onto an ice ledge when firefighters got there. They put on their dry suits, tied ropes around themselves to make sure they were safe and swam out to him.

Crews then pulled the man to shore and he was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital. Komen says the man, who was about 35 to 40 years old, was conscious but not very alert after he was pulled from the water.

His condition hasn't been released.

I saw a guy out on the MN a ways upstream from the 77 bridge this afternoon....

Apparently someone was rescued from the 'sippi in Inver Grove today too. She went in going after her dog that had gone in...

It's just baaaaaarely safe enough for lakes in the metro, what are people doing on the river?

people are just asking to drown when they go out on the river this early. I for one am still careful with some of the lakes I like to fish and will take the time to check them as I go.

Catfishing is not a hobby it is a way of life.

I was skeptical in the dead of winter last year. Was about to venture out and changed my mind after the first step.

It's just way too unpredictable for me.

Rivers are way to scary this time of year.

To each there own but a lot of years the ice seems to get thicker on the river quicker than the lakes early in the year. Not sure why. Like everywhere you have to be careful and even more careful on the river.

I was X-mas shopping on Sunday and drove over 494 E to 35 E and noticed a portable and 3 guys out on the right side of the road on the MN River. They were way out in the middle. I was little nervous seeing that much gear and people in a small area this early. Don't get me wrong I am a die hard fisherman but I would never risk my life for a fish... thatís just me.

I heard through the grapevine that the guy that fell through did exactly what he intended to do by walking on thin ice and falling in wink

If he really was trying to fall through it sounds like he realized he made a big mistake because he was holding onto an ice ledge when they got to him. Too bad to ever hear anybody would go as far as doing something like that...
