I'm never one to be in much of a hurry to fish first ice, so I'm gonna wait until the first week of december when the ice has gotten to the 6 inch mark.

For West Rush lake, the first 3 inches has occurred on 12/4/04, 12/2/05, 12/3/06, 11/27/07, and 11/25/08. It was real early last year.

My target date to get on the ice is dec. 2 on a lake in the sturgeon lake area, that should be plenty far north for some good ice (5 inches or more for me). If need be, I can wait until dec. 5.

If I can whack and stack enough deer in November I'll be out there checking and testing through December with ya's.

Otherwise I won't be out until Jan. 1.

Good luck and be safe.

It doesn't have to make sense; it just has to make code.

In the 80's we were on the ice around the edges most years by Thanksgiving and many times could fish over Thanksgiving weekend but the past few years we were looking at first ice by the first weekend in December. I think we will see first fishable ice by the 7th and permanenet shacks will start going out in force around Christmas this year. All depends on the depth of the lake and how large it is as well as suitable temps to make ice. 20's at night and 30's during the day will make ice just fine as long as the winds stay down and the snow stays away for awhile. I gotta get through hunting seasons first then I can start gearing towards first ice.

Icefishing around Thanksgiving is not going to happen anywhere in the state this year guys. I would say walkable ice up north should happen around Dec 10th. But who knows, a Arctic snap could be just around the corner. Lets hope.

Hmmm...I like the way you think. I love icefishing as much as the next guy, but I have yet to bowhunt past the first week in December for the past 5 years. Just too darn cold for my liking.
