So with this logic of giving him more money Denny Green should have been given more money when things were going good, Right? Oh wait he did. Hmmm where did that get us. Were the Vikings getting offers for Childress mid season to take him away from the Vikes. Will the fact of a multi million dollar contract make him a better coach to finish the season on a high note? Why then award him this contract? Looks like we are going to win the SB yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gol darn, I am on the fridge of letting this team go to Cali just to get rid of one less sports team manipulating us to benefit themselves.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know what, Vikings just go will ya. Be funny seeing a Vike helmet in Cali just like an oiler helmet in tennessee.

Go a head and judge me as a fan or not. What it comes down to for me the money in pro sports the dividend return is far below it should be. As far as charity, Oh yea we get a guy signing a a ball for a dead kid, A dog would do a better job just being curled up at the end of the bed. Lots of return there. Wait the guy handing out a squash did a a lot I will remember that next year when he does it again.

I know its nonsensical and a rant but use your imagination. Try placing a yes to those first few questions for reasons to adjust his pay mid season looks, ridiculous to me. I can not see any other reason for this. And for rewarding a guy before the job is done I would love an occupation that does that. Unless someone saying Awsome job is a raise.

Two straight divisional titles and being the LEAST paid coach in the division...no brainer there. Show him the $$$$!

He's brought in some fantastic free agents and seems to be drafting as well as anyone in the league. He also put his arse on the line with the Favre deal...seems to be working out o.k. so far. You may not like him but you certainly can't deny the success he's bringing to the Vikes.

I'm also wondering if you know how much $ Zigi has put into the TEAM (For Childress) over those years?

How many "big games" has he won? What his record vs. the packers (excluding this year)?

In the NFL every game is a big game. He is 0-1 in the playoffs. One game is all he had and if you don't want to re-sign him based on one playoff game thats fine. Who cares what his record is against the Pack. This isn't college footbal where rivalry games could cost you yuor job. It's great Ziggy is giving him good ballplayers to coach. Ziggy wants to win and Chilly has gotten better every year. The head coach gets a pretty big say on who he wants to draft so thank you Chilly for Adrian. You must think a coach should win with scrubs and no talent and do it in his first year otherwise they should be canned. There are other teams in the league like this. Go catch a plane to Cleveland, Oakland, or Detroit.

Signing Chili to an extension makes sense to me. You may not like his personality or his play calling, but you can't argue with his record.

No manager in any business does it all on his/her own. You surround yourself with qualified people and give them to the tools to succeed. He's done that.

The Vikes look to be a formidable team for the next few years. If we go deep into the playoffs this year it would have cost a lot more to extend his contract.

Again, you may not like him, but you'll have to accept he's not going anywhere for quite a long time.

From the strib, by Souhan, posted by Judd. Go Chili!

Because it was on the new premium portion of our website, some of you probably didn't see the column that Jim Souhan wrote about Vikings coach Brad Childress on Wednesday. The piece dealt with Childress' popularity, or lack of it, and how he felt about that.

This is especially interesting this morning because it was announced Thursday that Childress had signed a contract extension -- the new deal will start with this year and run through 2013 -- and immediately many Vikings fans expressed their displeasure with the decision made by owner Zygi Wilf.

The feeling among the disgruntled was that Childress should have had to win in the postseason before he was rewarded. Of course, some simply don't like Childress because of his demeanor and were holding out hope Wilf would show him the door before his first five-year contract expired.

While fans are entitled to their opinion -- and I can see the argument from the group who felt Childress should win a playoff game or two to be rewarded -- I've got news for everyone. Childress really doesn't care what you think. And for that matter he doesn't care what I think. And that isn't a bad thing. Given the nature of Childress' job, if he concerned himself with criticism he probably couldn't function.

Asked if he wanted to be popular, Childress told Souhan: "You can't worry about that. It's kind of like I tell my kids -- it's not a popularity contest. I'm your Dad. I'm not trying to be your friend."

Although it's easy to get the impression that Childress is the "my way or the highway" type with no patience for others, that simply isn't the case. I think everyone would agree that Childress' first season with the Vikings in 2006 was difficult on many. Coaches, players, ownership, fans, media. You name it. It was a year of adjustment for Childress and given a second chance he would probably do things a bit differently. But so would everyone else who was given a second chance to do something for the first time.

Now in his fourth season, Childress seems far more comfortable in his own skin. He certainly has his quirks and there are things about him that aren't going to change, but he seems far more willing to listen to ideas (from all sides) and if you get him on a subject he finds interesting he will talk for a half-hour without giving it a second thought. And that goes way beyond football. Childress' best thoughts often have nothing to do with his 'A' job. Then there is that extremely dry sense of humor that was suppressed in 2006 but now can be heard in many of his news conferences.

Childress, who is from the Chicago area, admits he grew thick skin working as an assistant coach with the Eagles in the hard-nosed Philadelphia market from 1999 to 2005. In some ways that has probably served him well as an NFL coach and in some ways maybe it hurt him early on because he was so guarded. This summer I visited with Childress and his wife, Dru-Ann, to write a story about them that didn't center around the football environment in which we so often see Childress working.

At one point the conversation turned to the perception of Childress in Minnesota and if anything could be done to change it. Childress made no attempt to dodge the question and gave an extremely insightful answer.

"I'm not Bud Grant; Bud Grant is not coming back," he said. "He's all the way at the other end of the hall [at Winter Park]. I love Bud Grant. But I'm not Minnesotan, I'm Midwestern. Do Minnesotans look at us like we're short-timers? The Minnesota nice thing is real. The flip side of it is, 'You're just passing through here,' and it's very austere and it's got kind of a hard backside. I don't think I'm misstating anything here. I'm not saying it in a bad kind of way. It just is what it is."

And that is something Childress seems to have accepted, even if many Vikings fans haven't accepted him.

chili grew on me...i think he deserves it this time.

first thing he did that started to win me over is when him and zigy went out and got jared...a player i wanted us to get in the worse way...he went and gathered all the info he could, talked to jared and the people closest to jared and gave him a chance, so we pulled the trigger.

the next thing he did that i thought was awesome is when he personally went down and did the same kind of scouting and pulled the trigger for percy...that was sweet.

then best of all is when he admitted to himself and the fans that junkson wasn't ready to lead a championship caliber team so we went out and got favre.

the players never complain about him and it seems the team never even blinks under controversy...after the media and the whole nation made it out to be how us signing favre late was just horrible and the team could fall apart....blah blah blah.

under him we've made a pretty bad team into a really good team and we are about to be 9-1.

i love the team and we are built to win...a new coach coming in would partly dismantle what we got and try to build for their style.

i think our offense is one of the best in the league...its so nice to have a qb that can run it! we all debated for years is it the play calling or is it the qb....take a peek at our record, stats, points per game, ect, seems to be pretty clear to me!!

SKOL

It doesn't prove anything. It means he understands the Vikes could go 15-1 with a deep playoff run and there would still be people wanting him gone.

I'm scratching my head a bit over how so many complain about the coach of a team that's 8-1 and has it's division locked down.

I'm more or less complaing about the decision to extend his contract midseason (starting immediately) without a single playoff win? Yea the vikes have had a great season so far with farve, but don't forget what happened to the Jets last season. Did anyone watch the games vs the Ravens or the 49'ers? Should of lost the 49er game for sure, o and the Ravens game... Were up by 14 in the 1st quarter, then "classic" Childress PREVENT OFFENSE? He honestly thought the game was over! Needless to say we squeaked out a win thanks to a missed 30 yrd feild goal. And if it weren't for the Farve magic in the 49er game our record should be 6-3 right now and still fighting for our division. Were lucky thats not the case right now... You can't point to childress in either of those wins and say "you won that game for us" instead you would say "you [PoorWordUsage], you almost blew that game for us"

Does he really deserve this contract at this point in time?

He might not deserve it at this point in time. But let's be practical, he was going to get an extension and everyone within the organization knew it.

So if you're Ziggy, would you rather negotiate with his agent when Chili doesn't have a playoff win, or after this team makes its playoff run? Sure you can wait, but the more playoff wins he gets the higher that salary figure is going to climb. In my estimation Ziggy made a savvy move.

That's a good point Getanet.

Chili has grown on me over the last year or so. Every year you can see him growing as a coach. Fans usually give players a few years in order to develop but rarely do the fans extend that same courtesy to a coach. Maybe his first year he gets a little slack but not much.

The fact is that Chili took over a very bad team that was not only lacking in talent but also lacking the proper attitude to win. Chili came in and cleaned house from top to bottom and rebuilt the talent on the field and the attitude they carry. Thats not an easy task.

This team is built to win right now so I think keeping chilli around is the best option. If you bring someone else in they almost always want totally new coaching staffs and totally new schemes. That would set us back 2-3 years.

brdhunter, getanet, and nofish, you are all spot on!! In different ways but each has a great point. Good posts.

I like Chili as a coach, he is a work in progrees, but he is light years ahead of Tice and any other coach that was available when he was.

The head coach of an NFL team does a lot more than what we see him do for 3 hours on sunday. I'm not a big fan of Childress but obviously he is doing a good job for this team to be in the position that it is in.

Why does anyone care how much money Ziggy wants to pay him? Give him $50 billion for all I care, I don't have to pay it.

I personally don't like the guy. But I and many others said this year he has no excuses not to have a great team. Guess what, we have a great team. And his "kick @$$" offense is a kick @$$ offense this year. He has helped put the pieces together and look where we are, it pains me to say, but he has earned an extentsion.

It was going to happen, regardless of it was now, or at the end of the season. I like what, and who Chili brought here since he became head coach.
