Ok.. so we talk about Rapala DT crankbaits and senkos a lot on here.. but what do you think is the most underrated lure out there?

Me, I would say a Jig Worm. But not sure its under rated?

Under rated or under exposed?

I would say in my eyes, lipless cranks don't get enough attention. Jigworm is another good one though. Many fish have fallen for my jigworm presentation.

I think this question will vary depending on each persons style of fishing. For me, finesse fishing in general has been very underrated. My vote goes to the good old Drop-Shot.

i'd say a straight inline spinner/bucktail

not many hardcore bass fishermen seem to use them, but I catch some pretty darn nice bass on them while pike and musky fishing

yet for some reason i havent bought downsize versions to use bass fishing...

I'd have to say jigworm or swim jig. Not many guys realize how many places a swim jig can be used...

A grub. Swim it or fish it like a worm.
Another one is a beetle spin. I have my kids throw them because it's less drag on their little arms than a spinnerbait. They catch a surprising number of bass.

Yep, The Grub for sure would be my pick.

I'm with GoblueM, the in-line spinner.
However, this season I guided a client (70 plus years old) that tossed a Hula Popper. But instead of working it back like a Chugger he just reeled it straight back in at differant speeds. Which caused it to bubble on the surface or just under the surface, depending on how fast he retrieved it. DD if you read this we were fishing the same lake that you and I fished smallies on. This client caught more than his fair share of fish both bass and northerns that trip, fishing that Hula Popper in such an unorthodox presentation.

Hiya -

Jigworms is definitely high on the list. Grubs too. Jigworms are REALLY underrated for smallies. I have one tied on basically at all times unless I'm up in the rushes. (Jigworms are great dock skippers with the right jighead - and you seldom miss a fish...)

Overall though, I think the single most underrated lure type is spoons. Jawbreakers are great, and Barney Spoons are awesome if you're lucky enough to get your hands on some. Versatile and efficient as can be in thick cover.

Cheers,
Rob Kimm

I agree on Jawbreakers, they catch a lot of fish. Can be a low hookup % though unless you know what you're doing...

I would say jerkbait... the rest get the respect they deserve... there is no bad lure out there, just a wrong time and place to use it!

I'll agree on the spoons and both inline spinners and spinnerbaits. The other I would say are minnow style jerk-baits. This year we had a lot of fish just crush jerk-baits.

Edit: Tonka beat me to it frown I will say though there have been days where I've said "well, what I thought would work isn't working. What wouldn't I use in this situation?" A few times that's worked out well for me.

I have a hair jig that's part of the Male anatomy. The Banjo Minnow was FUNNY!

My serious answer is the #4 and #5 buck tail Mepps. They really do catch a ton of Bass and Gators.

For me its the hair jig, hardly see anyone throw em but a select few, and they get absolutely smoked by the smallies, largies like em to but the one problem there is they don't come through the weeds greates, it seems like the hair likes to stick to the weeds

For bass I would have to say a live bait bobber fishing setup. I've caught some nice LM and it always seems whenever you see a young kid with a nice 5+ lb bass it is on this setup.

Now if we're talking walleyes, I think I caught more unintentional 'eyes on jigs and dropshoting fishing for bass then I did intentionally fishing for walleyes.

It's funny how many tactics are "species specific" and catch other fish, but are never used, ie. the inline muskie spinners.

agree with mozy, countless times while panfishing with my very young son we are just pounding bass with just a good chunk of a crawler or leech. dont know if it is all the action the little dinks are putting on the bait, or simply the bass are triggering because of the frenzy. having said that you know if you went out and tried to catch bass on purpose with this set up, you probably wouldnt catch any.
