Speaking of deer hunting, many moons ago we were fishing on one of those resivour(sp) lakes during the deer season and watched several deer swim out to the islands from the mainland to hide.
Who said they are dumb animals??

Who said they are dumb animals?? speaking of deer swimming, this past july, i was fishing out on the st louis river and was driving back to smithville, right around buoy 57-58, and i saw something in the river about 20 yards in front of my boat.. i slowed down and it was a mama deer with her two fawns trailing closely behind... they were swimming from the minnesota side to the wisconsin side.. i stopped the boat and watched them.. the mom and the first fawn had no problem getting out of the water and darting up the very steep hill. the second fawn fell a couple times before she made it up. nonetheless, it is one of the coolest experiences i have had while fishing.. if i wouldn't have slowed down, i would have hit the mama deer with my boat and it probably would have been fatal.

I have watched wolves chase deer from the mainland to the islands on island lake many times. I've also seen quite a few wolves headed from the mainland to islands during hard water season.
Good luck to all fishing and hunting this weekend. It sure looks like a dandy!
Good things come to those who bait!

My buddy and I were fishing the river this year and saw these three deer swimming in spirit lake. We sent the picture to the Duluth news paper and they put it in there one Sunday. Anyways here it is. Is anyone else going fishing this week or is it pretty much over for the year. I'm really tempted to get out at least one more time.

Hit Island yesterday and found out after a few hours of the off and on rain in the cold wind on the west side was more than I could take. Hit the east side and found pike, crappie and a couple very small eyes. Same thing at Fish Lake earlier in the day. Sat will be the day to hit it hard right Gunflint.

JWMiller, I was wondering the same thing until I remembered that they were swimming towards MN. Plus I think it was late may when we saw them. Anyways it's pretty cool to hear that other people have seen this as well.
Good to hear other people are still fishing. I haven't been out for a couple weeks now, and that is not cool. I have to get one more trip in at least. Hopefully tomorrow, saturday or both.

Yeah, I saw those deer by 33 two or three times. Steve, do you remember that bull moose we saw swimming across East Bearskin? Seems like a long time ago now.

Ya Mark those moose were very cool to see that up close and personel. Fishing Junky I was never much good at rodeo stuff. Too much wind and Gunflint got blown off before I could get there. Maybe Mon Ill hit it.

I got completely blown off the water today. Tomorrow looks a lot better and I see low temps above freezing forecast for all next week. Could we be fishing on Thanksgiving?

Well that's it for me and the 2009 open water season. I pulled the batteries, electronics, put the cover on and pushed the boat into the corner of the garage. Had a good year and caught lots of fish in lots of different places. I made it a point to try new lakes this year and I learned a lot. I'm starting to really get hooked on fly fishing. I also have two new regular partners who are both 6 years old. A day fishing with them is about the same as with my fishing buddies except we have to take a break for a hike or some swimming.
Island wasn't doing it for me this fall so I switched to Vermillion the for last several weekends. We did great on the walleyes up there. Of course with Steve Foss' book in the boat we couldn't go wrong.
Why can't mosquitos suck fat instead of blood?

I got out on Island today. I could only fish for a few hours but I put 4 in the live well. Nothing big but any walleyes in the boat in November is a plus. Looks like I may have a shot for next weekend.
