so today while I was out duck hunting. a flock of blue bills swing by. I pull up and I heard a pop. so I thought it was the shell going off. NOPE that was the primer going off. but in the middle of pulling my slide back the shell goes off inside my acting blowing the hull in half. but all the shot went of the barrle. there was enough of the shell in the chamber where the shot went down the barrle. I saw the fire and sparks on the side of my gun where the action is. I am so lucky that shell went off when it did. because I could of blown up my barrle or action. I am not going to say who the maker of the shell was because I don't want to have fights on here about the maker. I love this shell and its has good knock down power. and no it was not black cloud.

Probably not a bad idea to get that gun checked out before shooting again. Thats a lot of pressure in areas not designed to hold it in.

A buddy had that happen while we were in NoDak a couple weeks ago. Same thing, down to him seeing sparks. The end of the hull was melted when it came out.
I won't mentioned brands either, but kc0myy, it was a gray shell...

Pretty close to the same thing happened to me this year. Heard the primer go off and then a second later there was a thump and the powder must have went off. I could see the pellets and wad come out of the end of the barrel and only go about 15 feet. Could have been really dangerous if the pellets and wad got lodged half way up the barrel and I didn't notice and fired again. Mine was also a kent shell. It was raining out too. I shot the whole case and this was the only one.

I also have had shells laying in the bottom of the boat that I have fired and no problems. the point is if its man made or made by machine its not going to be perfect its bound to happen

Like elwood said, I to have had it happen to me with a few different brands. You put enough rounds through a gun and it will happen to anyone.

Wow.. Had the same thing happen to this year too on the opener.
It was like fireworks in the chamber. The shell got stuck half way out and the leftover powder kept burning inside and there was a LOT of smoke coming out. After checking the gun over, i found the pellet casing stuck by my choke.
I was shooting Winchester Xp steels (unused from last year). I don't know if it got wet or the powder was just too old, but i decided to get rid of the whole box and everything single one i had that was not purchase this year. Just so i don't relive the same scary memory.

I had it happen once with Remington Nitro Steel in my Beretta. It can happen with any round. I had black smoke/powder fly out all over my face and hand and the wad stuck in the barrel just into the choke tube. The shot itself barely cleared the edge of the boat. I ended up having to unscrew the choke tube with the key to my house which happened to fit the notches and the wad then came out. I also literally poured unburnt powder out of the chamber and trigger area, all of which was filthy. It was not something I'd like to have happen again!

I've seen guns blow up cause of this problem. If ever in doubt if shells are either old or have been wet, make sure they are the last of three to be shot in succession or are thrown away. Sometimes older shells and ones that have gotten wet will go bang but not KABANG and will leave the wad jammed in the barrel.

Anyone know what would happen if you were using a pump and ejected the shell before it went off and then it went off on the ground/bottom of boat, inside your waders?

With me the shell just went poof and the BB's rolled out the end of the barrel with some unspent powder. I thought huh that was interesting. That was the only time it happened in 22 years of hunting ducks.

Had a couple of weird things happen like this. While sighting in for turkey, my roomate had a shell basically explode out the chamber of his auto. We think the extra tight turkey choke was too much pressue, and there was blow back out the sides. We have no idea where the BBs went. I was standing behind and to the right of him, and I felt air and who knows what else blow past me. Another crazy one was when my other friend shooting an 870 basically pumped it too fast, and was in the middle of pulling the trigger while pumping, same result as previous story. That one was not as scary I believe, as it was for sure just air escaping, while the first one with the auto we have no idea what happened, the shell was in a million pieces.
