No Mayflies yet. I did see a few small clouds of them staging under the water in Big Bay today though.

There was a large hatch in Pike Bay yesterday morning! Saw a few strays in Big Bay today!
Lots of small clouds of flies in the water column now also.

We had a heavy hatch on Saturday night in Oak Narrows. On Sunday water temps consistently were 70 degrees except for Big bay which was 67-68.

Water temps around our dock on an island in Frazer last weekend were 69.

They were hatching in Everett Bay and the Pike Bay Narrows this evening.
I expect Big Bay to go very soon now!

How do you think this will affect the fishing this weekend and next week??

The past two days have been very poor fishing for me for walleyes and the Big Bay hatch has not even happened yet!

This afternoon, we saw some dead ones on the surface as well as clouds of submerged bugs in Big Bay.

The hatch has been ongoing in Pike Bay since Sunday. Several of the smaller bays have had hatches as well. Some submerged bugs in Frazer.

We caught some walleyes today but we had to work for them. Jigging, Lindy rigging, downrigging, flat line trolling, and pitching jigs filled out our day.

Fishing was best in the rocks in 12 to 25 feet of water on jigs and Lindys.

Any reports from the west end? I arrive next saturday fo a week stay at WWR. Do you think the hatch will be over by then?

If you are lucky the main hatch will be over and the walleyes wil be starting to feed on our offerings again!

What is the best way to fish for walleyes during the mayfly hatch?

Try a short shank jig and a small piece of crawler. Thread it the length of the hook and leave a short (1/4 or 1/2 inch) trailer handing off the end. Work it vertically over rocks, gravel, or sand.

Lindy type rigs and spinners will also produce fish. Use a long lead (4 to 6 feet) and a crawler. Try a whole crawler and work your way down to a small piece if need be.

Some fish will respond to a crank. Use one that will get down near the bottom over deep water, but don't be afraid to run a bait suspended a few feet off the bottom. Running cranks on shallow shoreline breaks can also be productive.

Look for "oddball" places to fish. You may be surprised at where you'll find walleyes. Sometimes featureless stretches of shoreline can be excellent.

Heard it was about 62 in Fraiser yesterday morning. Probably cooler this morning as last night was cold. The wind mixed it up pretty good so it could be the same temp a few feet down. We need sun bad.......

I had 78 to 79 sun warmed degrees on Friday. That was just the surface temp, and of course it's cooler even a foot down. Monday I had 64 to 66 on the surface. Headin' out this afternoon...

A nice stretch of warm, sunny, calm weather had things headed in the right direction, but 5 consecutive days of clouds, rain, wind, and cold with lows in the 40's has set us back again. I was swimming on Saturday after taking a sauna, but it'll be a tad brisk again for a while.

Things are supposed to start improving tomorrow and by next week highs are supposed to be back in the mid to upper 70's with lows in the 50's.

Big hatch in Big Bay last night. Still bugs flying around near surface this AM. Fishing,as you might expect was slow. Even the fish I marked did not bite very well. On a positive note I am glad they hatched now. Get it over and start catching fish consistently in summer locations. Water temp was still in mid 60's this morning,but it is very nice out today and temps will rise some. Good luck to all. Mike

Paul - thanks much for the advice. I just returned from a 3-day trip to Vermilion (and there were a lot of mayflies), fishing only in the evenings. On July 2 I caught only two fish (15" smallmouth and a 24" walleye), both on leeches (only tried a crawler for a short while). On July 3 I took your advice and fished a new spot using crawlers and caught 9 walleyes and lost 3 others while trying to net them by myself (one 20" caught and another 20" lost while netting). On July 4 I fished the same spot and caught 6 walleyes, two on leeches and the rest on crawlers. Fishing was much better than I had expected.

never fish the v without crawlers. I have learned the hard way, it is a science. learned from a local and will never put on a leech again.

I think that many people get psyched out when the mayfly's come. Many didn't even try to fish since we had the hatch.

Now with the boat traffic this past weekend, that in itself would be enough to keep me on shore. I have to say that I was impressed. Not one accident, in our area anyway. For the amount of traffic, that was a major accomplishment.

Any water temps in the Frazer Bay area? Bringing family in from Miami this week for swimming and fun.......Also, I assume the hatch is over in this area as well?

The lake was 66-67 degrees in Frasier bay. As far as the Mayflies they are pretty much done. A few stagglers here and there.
