Took my 3 kids up for a day trip to the south side today for some walleyes. First spot wasn't producing like it did for me and my buddies 2 weeks ago so I punched in my waypoint to get to a spot on the north side of Banana Reef. As I approached on my beeline with the GPS Mapping I saw to my horror(as seems to happen all the time) that as I grew closure to my waypoint another boat was already there about spot on it. OK, I veered off and went to the north to the deeper water about 2 football fields length away from "that guy". I set the kids rods in their hands and checked the finder for fish dropped the wind sock and my trolling motor for a controlled drift. I looked up and "That guy" was now backtrolling directly towards me(about a 100 yds away now). I turned up the trolling motor to get away from him sideways to continue our drift he turned towards us again. I finally totally reversed course to try to avoid his backtroll and he reversed course as well. Then he got closer and proceeded to chew me out in front of my 3 young kids for coming up on top of him and that he has been fishing this spot for 45 years and "why don't I just get in his boat - I got plenty of room". I composed myself and let him know I have been fishing this spot for 15 yrs and last I knew it was called banana reef and didn't belong to anyone in specific and that he was quite a piece of work. After our exchange he started away and my oldest 11 year old daughter exclaimed "now I know why "that guy" is fishing alone". He then proceeded away and went after the next nearest boaters who happened to arrive after us! I regret that I let "that guy" really ruin my day because I let that conversation stew in my mind still to this minute instead of enjoying the day with my kids(we caught 10 today- I didn't see "that guy" catch any. Has anyone run into "that guy" in a newer white Lund walkthrough with a new suzuki 150/175?? Is he a local legend ignoramous or something? He seemed to enjoy our conversation even though I obviously did not in front of my kids....like he was some kind of Al Linder I was hawking....kind of like a Will Farrel charactar - "I'm kind of a big deal around here"....except really not funny at all and much more offensive. Thanks for letting me vent..... stay courteous out there.

Don't sweat it. There are guys like that one just about every lake. You were more than courteous by giving him his space. I actually think its good for your kids to see the "other side". Use it as a teaching experience. Congrats on your successful day.

I agree, don't worry about it. Lots of people like that out there. My kid and I fish on Tonka quite a bit, lots of learning experiences for my kid out there.

Aww yes..the old "that guy" situation. Not the funniest situations to be in for either guys, cuz some guys think 15 yards is to close, while others may think if your fishing the same structure or flat that they are...your already to close. In all fairness PK I think you gave the guy enough room as you were at least over 150 yards away and he was just a crabby fellow or it was just his time of the month (his man period) and he needed to left off some steam! I'll admit I can be "that guy" but not in situations like that, not with kids around or with anglers who respect your space, thats just not courteous. I mean its Mille Lacs and your gonna see people period, its just that close geographically to the cities and st. cloud for anglers to make a day trip like you did. I would of told the guy that he don't own the lake and if he wants to have spots to himself trade in his nice lund and new suzuki for kevlar canoe and go to the B-dubs or try another flat, its not like there isn't a hundred other spots to try out there. Thats my soapbox thanks for listening...and good job on taking the kids out their lucky to have fished the pond at such an early age!

It would be intersting to see if "that guy" would "blow his cork" if he ever did the P4 or spring rainy river "bumper boat" fishing.....

Maybe the next time you and your kids come to Mille Lacs...will have everyone removed from the lake so you and your kids can have it all to yourselves...for better or worse at times that's fishing on Mille Lacs...

i think you might be misinterpreting the orginal poster. it seems he was more than happy to share banana reef with the guy.

Are you sure that guy was in a lund walkthrough and not a little red lund?

little-red lund,

Take some time, look in the mirror and slap yourself.

You should be ok once you come down.

Some people can't read the sarcasm in my "horror" that another guy was on my GPS coordinate spot - happens all the time. By the way I've been hugging a dropoff on Winnie with a ton of other boats coming by as close as you can hop and just have said hello if they were bitin' - as long as people are courteous and don't snag you up/cut you off, etc it isn't a problem. And yes, little red lund, you and people like you should stay off the lake and leave it all to me and my three kids.....that would be great...for all of us.:)
OK sorry to start a whiny post. Just wanted any decent minded fisherman like the ones on FM to be aware and maybe just have a couple of kind words in their back pocket to straighten this type of Yahoo out when/if they run into one on the big pond(he was absolutely absurd). Back to fishing.....thanks to all for the additional ideas for that type of conversation.

little red lund... what a real man you are... fishing with kids is fun and you have to make it enjoyable to them by not having to teal with turds that seem to be all grumped because they are having to much fun for you...

I'm not "that guy"..I have a red lund...the guy in the post had a white lund...my point is we "all" have had experiences like this at one time or another, especially on ML...we get mad for a little while, maybe exchange a few four letter words and get over it. I bet if we asked "that guy" his perspective,he would have a different point of view of how things went down...there's always two sides to every story...we are just getting one person's side of the story... I guess it is too bad that there were kids involved.

I'm not "that particular guy" but I not afraid to let someone know when there too close, but I never claim a "spot" to be my own.. what gets me is when I catch a fish or you see someone else catch a fish suddenly there's an armarda of boats circling around the boat that caught the fish...I've also learned you never ever put out a bouy marker...I always have a musky rod in the boat at all time with a biggest jake lure they make..so consider yourself fore warned...

I agree that kids shouldn't have to deal with this [PoorWordUsage], but should it end with them? I don't want to have to deal with that [PoorWordUsage] either, and I haven't been a "kid" for quite some time! There's a lot of water out there. If someone's in "your spot" today, just remember that you might be in theirs tomorrow.

Little red lund, You are a piece of work. Same guy, different color boat. So what if other boats fish next to you if you get a fish. Guess what dude, thats part of fishing in MN. I'd say if you cann't handle it you need to find a new hobby. But why don't you just do that regardless, we deffinently do not need people like you on the lakes.

Wow i wish i would have met up with either of these guys, one question i have for little red is this. say i am fishing and you come in to join in, and start to drift toward my boat. Are you going to have issues with me since i am not moving toward you or should i just move to avoid any confrontation with you? Why would you not be considerate enough to move? one last thought, toss that big muskie rig in my boat and hold on cause you will go for a ride like you have never imagined. I would sacrifice my pole and lure to make my point, along with the DNR knowing of your actions. and god forbid you hook my son or wife, it would make for a very long day for you. good day and good fishing.

I do agree with LRL. There are two sides to every story (I am guilty of it also) and the side being told by one person always favors that person.

I just get a kick out of it when people flip-out about a single post, and go into attack mode because of what was posted is not what they would like to see smirk I do not see LRL attacking anyone but see a bunch of "good" doers attacking him. Then you have a post like above and we wonder where the problems start.

I am sorry the orig. Poster's kids had to see this. All I can say is I have been fishing ML for years (like most in this forum) and have been very lucky to never run into anything like this. Heck I never have run into this on any lake that I can recall. Maybe I am not looking hard enough I guess. I understand there are crazy people out their and the best thing I have found is to let my "pride" slip when I feel things like this could happen. Expecially when my kids are with me. When some one does not like what I have done on the road (with my kids with me or not), is raging out, I wave and smile now. After it is over I have a good chuckle and move on. If someone was to start yelling and swearing around my kids I would again swallow my man "pride", take the high road and do somthing in the boat (say "hey kids look what dad has in his tackle box"). Not involve them in the situation and keep them from even knowing. Right after this pack up and move far away. Forget about it and enjoy the rest of the day. By the end of the day I would not even remember what happened enough to make a thread about it on FM. Anything more than that I let that other person win. If I made a thread about it then I would be reliving the situations for days after and maybe weeks. It comes down to people are people and nothing anyone does is going to change that person and do not become "that guy" while the situation is going on. Being the "tough guy" on-line or in real life IMO is showing off the "that guy" side of your self. Any confrontation I have been involved with in my life (as hard as it is for me to admit) was partly my fault when when all is said and done. So to keep my self out of these situations I have to look at my actions first and formost. Sometimes I am sure you will just meet up with a crazy nut that no matter what you do sone thing will happen, but it takes my self controlling my self not to further it and let the crazy guy win.

All things I said above are just what I have found to work for me and may not work for others. I could be totaly wrong also.

I agree wholeheartly Shackbush. However if my 13 yr old son were with me, he is old enough to know that a guy yelling at me for "being too close" or being in his area, is a bunch of [PoorWordUsage]. He would be more libel to yell or say something back to a guy screaming at him or me. I would sooner just move out of the way, however you sling a lure at me, then it is a different world. I am not one for confrontation but will not sit by why someone bashes me especially if i am in a boat on a 100k acre lake. Seems like [PoorWordUsage] to me.
