thanks for your interest about catching these fine creatures.

but sadly, i am not much help, unless i see their behavior first hand. if you would like, i could probably get up to osakis this week, and study them a bit, so i can help you find the best way to catch some.

sometimes, the carp in larger lakes like osakis, are just uncatchable.

but if i get can watch them for a bit, i can usually give good advice on how to catch them.

Plain hook, split shot and a can or 2 of corn. Just throw out a handful of corn, then thread some corn on the hook and throw it in the middle of the corn pile. Loosen the drag, put the rod in a holder and sit and wait. Once the line is running out, tighten the drag and hang on. No need to really set the hook as they pretty much do so themselves. Fun way to fish and I've caught many fish that way.

with my experience with big water carp, it is never that easy. you will always need a special presentation for each area, to match the behavior of the fish. such as crusing, sunning, feeding, jumping, etc. also, reading the body language of the carp is a key to sucess in big water carping. if you can see the fish, look for body language.

do they feed off the bottom? size 1 circle hook, wad of crawler. You can't not hook them. otherwise use the corn idea, except make sure that hook won't bend easily.

The carp were moving fairly fast, paid no attention to a waxworm or small angleworm. Saw a couple of them go to the bottom an poke around a little and a few chasing another that must have had found something to eat. Suppose this coming weekend there will not be any around.

Never had a problem, at least if the carp of decent size. I figured they would bend a size 6 in about 2 seconds.

For where I fish a size 1 helps keep the drum from being gut hooked which they have an uncanny ability to do even with circle hooks. I suppose you wouldn't have that problem in a lake though.

the fish that are moving like that, you have not chance, but when they slow down and swim along the bottom then cast out a jig and a worm. they should take it. but you have to present the jig withing a foot from them, be sure you cast past them and bring it to them. if you cast on top of them they will likely spook

the size of the hook has nothing to do with the strength. i use size 8 mosquito hooks. and i have never had the hook bend or anything.

it all depends on the quality of the hook, i love gamazakatzus. owners are nice too

It does in the fact that the smaller the hook is the thinner it is gonna be.

I have bent size 4 gamakatsu octopus circles before.

true, but if you are fighting the fish correctly they wont bend. you must be setting your drag way to high to bend hooks

ive seen some 8 year old kids put the hurt on the carp witha bow.. it seems that the little kids rods, crappy line, small hooks and waxied seem to catch alot of carp in my parts.. but if you can get close enough go for a cane pole and plain hook with breand, keepa empty can of carmex and fil it with ciniman and dip the bread in it once and a while...treble hooks on dare deviles work good to.. huge lump of gulp crawlers on there and cast a ways past the school and drag it to the midde and yank really hard!

try casting crappie plastics on jigs. present the lure within a foot of the fish

jake, been reading trough this post and also come across these 20 to 30 lb monsters and have thrown everything at them but certainly not interested in eating any of it. what are these " cruising" carp doing? usually see them spring through early summer and then again in fall up shallow just swimming. not spawning not rutting up the bottom, just swimming along what look like carp paths or trails. cant imagine they are exercising.

I 've fished the "Big O" for 40 years. I know there has always been carp in there, but over recent years they seem to be very abundant. Whether in the morning on the surface over deep water, or during the day in the shallows or bull rushes, they sure have been making a racked.

It used to be illegal to throw rough fish back in the lake. I just searched the regs and didn't see that law?????

You can throw them back as long as they are alive and heathly if they are not you have to take them with you. PLESE DO LEAVE THEM ON THE SHORE THAT IS NOT LEGAL
