How big of a deal is it to install a trim/tilt gage.

Why do you want one??? I've got two in my boat, one was a standard dashboard gauge, the other is part of the Mercury SmartCraft gauges, and I don't use either of them. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see the value of having them?
In terms of installing one, I wouldn't know where to start ......

IMHO, with the exception of a sterndrive or pontoon boat, I would consider them worth the money. However, to answer your question, installing the guage itself is relatively easy, use the correct size hole saw then wire it up. Have you looked to see if there is a sending unit on the motor already?
