I wouldn't hold your breath on the catfish. You might get 1 or 2. If you use crawlers you should at least catch a few other fish, maybe even a walleye. If you use cutbait you might be in for a skunker frown

Where is the best place to catch a catfish in this area or north if Peltier isn't a good choice? I have never caught one and would love to finally catch one!

Thanks!

St. Croix River. Or, depending on how far north you want to go, the snake river.

Any specific spots on the St. Croix for shorefishing?

I've tried the Oceola landing but did not get a bite? Any better ideas? (I was using nightcrawlers)

The Oceola landing can be good but it is aways a dusk to little after dark bite for me. I fish under the bridge area and use frog's. Not a hot bite but good easy shore spot. Also better nice spot is the park where the rum dumps into the sippi in Anoka I use suckers cut in half at this spot again best bite is at dusk to a liitle after. I have also heard Golden lake in Circle Pines has good cat fishing from shore although I have not been there yet just heard from I guy at work that he has cought a few there on nightcrawlers you can look it up on the DNR web page.

do some reading in the catfish forum. you will find many good bait ideas and gear set ups there. you will be hard pressed to get fishing spots given to you. most people put in quite a bit of time to get onto good spots and they won't just give them away over the internet. if you have a boat, then you have a good chance of finding some great fishing spots. from shore it is more difficult to get on to the big cats. i suggest checking google maps or something for public parks along the river and start with that. it can take a lot of hiking to find decent spots. if you go to the easily accessible spots, chances are they will get heavy pressure as they are easy to reach.

Sorry I was in no way trying to get someone to expose their secret spot. I just wanted a place to start since I really have no idea when it comes to catfish and really want to catch one. My bad.

The croix is your best bet because you can use 2 lines, which will help you find out what they want alot faster. Evening of course would be the best time to fish.

Some spots to try...wild river state park access at mouth of the sunrise river, interstate park just south of taylors falls, franconia access, copas access, somerset (WI) access. All are proven shorefishing spots, just no guarantee that it's a cat you'll catch.

I went out from the pier and stopped when I saw a snowmobile drove acrossed and was busting through. there was a fresh set of foot prints that went right over it but as I got close water was coming up a little bit from the cracks so I didn't go much further. I drilled a few holes and got 4-5 inches in those spots. Some guys were fishing off of old mill road with the tip ups. be safe on that lake though, it has been known to have iffy ice conditions. hope this helps

Plenty of ice on both lakes for walking. Next weekend there will be 4wheelers and snowmobiles everywhere.

Got one small snot rocket on Saturday, off old mill road. It was about a nice solid 6 inches where we were. Saw a 4 wheeler track out there. It sure is about perfect for skating out there smile Wear some cleats!

I fished Peltier yesterday afternoon, along with seemingly everyone else.

I had very little luck... I was able to detect fish with my flasher but they were VERY RELUCTANT to bite. I caught two bluegills (OK in size), a normal-sized crappies, and two itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-black-polka-dotted-crappies (< 5 inches).

This has been my experience there all year.

Thanks frazwood, I didnt know peltier gets that much pressure. Maybe I should try a different spot then. I'm pretty much a hard water nube and just want to get some bites don't care too much about size.

I fished Peltier a few days ago as well. Lots of small perch, and some decent sized bluegills for about 45 minutes before sunset. Caught 5 keepers. Once the sun went down the fishing died.

Anyone have Ice thickness reports for Lake Peltier? I haven't been up there to check the ice yet. Are there any spots that seem to have spotty ice year after year (I thought I read that this lake can have wierd ice)? I am a newbie to Peltier and want to have some reliable info before I venture out. I heard from a bait shop that people are driving all over Centerville Lake. Anyone seeing vehicles on Peltier, besides ATVs and snowmobiles?

Everyone is driving on the lake. Just stay away from the waterworks area next to cr14. There is a underwater culvert that connects the 2 lakes and stays open/thin all year.

If your on peltier just keep going until you pass the point on the west shoreline, anywhere from 10 to 14 ft should do the trick.

Centerville is the definition of a bowl lake! Basically just go straight out and start drilling. I prefer 10 to 12 ft.

go to the back bay by the beach on centerville in about 8-10fow. set your tip up at about 3ft off the bottom. i always had better luck with bigger shiners also

oh trust me both these lakes got some big fish in them. im all for tryn new lakes. i basically ice fish 5 days aweek so i do a lot of lake hoppin. but when it comes right on down to it centerville is probably one of my favorite metro lakes especially when it comes to crappies cause my girlfriend and i can usually catch our limit in about an hour they are all basically between 8-10. i myself have caught a lot of 11-13 inch crappies out the. not to mention the first fish i caught this year ice fishin was out on centerville 22.5 inch walleye not bad for that lake and that was early december in like 13fow.

I drilled a lot of holes and moved around a lot on the lake with tons and tons of tiny pannies. Even fished with an ace fisherman out there and he landed exactly 28 tiny panfish. He thought he did good bacause he didn't catch any perch, LOL!

Yes there may be some nice pannies out there just not ready and willing to bite. The lake can really change from one day to the next. If you can go out ther and catch nice pannies every day you need to write a book.

My experiance across the street is not much better. Some ok fish mixed in with a ton of little ones.

But it's still always true, "A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day of work"...

seems like discussion of peltier has come to a dead end.
I do note the lack of fisherman out there. While Centerville looks like a carneval. Whats up.

I guess i was one of the lucky ones that started to fish centerville a few years ago when there were still big crappies, I havent been there for about two years now, I guess if you want big fish you have to go far unless you know about a sweet spot in the metro area.

If there is a tourist season, why cant we hunt them?

I was watching some pro's out on Peltier Sat using just a bare jig and nailing slab crappie one after another. Convinced me that it definetly requires a certain technique. I tried jigging and couldn't even get a nibble. They did give out some good tips, but I still need alot of practice, practice, practice.

If you want to practice your jigging try doing it in a spearing sized hole. It makes it very easy to see how the jig reacts to what you do and how the fish react to the jig. You might only catch smaller fish but it's still fun and it's good practice too.

I drove onto Centerville on Tuesday of this week, some water at the landing from melted snow but no problem getting on/off.

Slow. We tried three spots and only caught 5 sunfish. Guys I talked to said it had been slow for a few days. I thought it would be good, with the long stretch of stable weather.

I drove on yesterday and the access was pretty good in the morning and then pretty poor in the afternoon. The ruts on the ramp are getting really big. PS - guy who parked his extended cab truck with the butt end hanging out into the ramp - thanks for giving everyone enough space to get off the lake. crazy

I was on peltier at 1st light this morning. The ruts are deep at the dam access, even for a truck
crappie report. I got there at 1st light and the crappies were strong in 10 feet. It lasted a whole 20 minutes. They were the 8 to 10 inch size.

The bite is alive and well. You need to get away from the usual spots. I've done very good the last few times out and am actually starting to see some bigger fish. If you keep catching the little fish either move or upsize your presentation.

It was the same way yesterday. I hammered them for about 20 minutes in the early morning - got my ten around 8 1/2-9" and then I went chasing sunfish the remainder of the morning. I was fishing a little deeper than you were but the fish were anywhere from 5-8 feet down in the water column and very visible on the vexilar.

Went out yesterday from 7am to 2pm. Caught 12 crappies between my son and I, ranging from 8 to 10". Used a red and yellow 16oz jig head with a minnow. Fishes were between 10' to 14'. Lots of boats on the southeast end of the lake, not sure why, but I try to stay away from the crowd. Put the underwater camera down and saw a bunch of bluegills, some crappies and two pikes. That kept my son busy.

That's about what you'll fin there. At least it's what I've found there.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

Was out on Centerville yesterday. ATV'd out to the normal spots from the public launch. 6" of ice at launch area. 15" of ice where we fished. Many areas had water/slush under the snow. Tough on the ATV. 6" crappies. 4" sunfish. 14" bass and a few perchies.

I was out on Peltier on the 4th and 5th this year. Found a lot of small perch belly hugging the bottom. Had the occasional school of crappies/sunnies come through (freinds in my group caught some of each). A few roaming bass and then we caught a few small northern (biggest being about 3lbs) on tip-ups. It was my first two times out so it was fun. Those days it was getting hit HARD because it was some of the first safe ice and it was a weekend.

Was out on Peltier in 12 FOW with little to no luck, small perch and bluegills but no crappies.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Keep what to themselves?? With the UPL on Peltier it's been getting fished regularly. Plus it's an easy spot to access. So no real secrets about these lakes. It happens every year, people flock to these lakes early and often. The only thing holding them back so far this year has been the slush and snow.

Considering that the "spot" is 100 yds from a busy street, it doesn't take long to "get the word out" that fish are being caught or the ice is good to go.

If you want to complain about something, complain about the amount of fish being kept, not the amount of people fishing a lake. If people would show a little self control and not keep limits 10 days in a row, that lake might have some decent fish left in it.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

I will show you the perfect example to what im talking about. Grab ur house and go pick a random spot on the lake and set up. IGUERANTEE you it will not be long before somebody is setting up rigght ontop of you. They have NO idea what ur fishing for, if you know what your doing there ir even if your catching fish but they don't care theres a shack there so they gotta be catching fish there right?
Now there's two shacks in this random spot so the next [PoorWordUsage] out sees this and rinks hmm. They must be catching fish over there! And so on and so on. Hadit happen on centerville yesterday

Easy fella, these lakes always get hard it isnt a secret and it never has been, even if there wasnt posts on the internet it would still be fished hard. Its ice fishing on a metro area lake, if you want to get away from people go to the boundary waters, even their your gonna fish next to people on some lakes.

dckasten1 - I can understand the frustration with the people who only look for the place with the most people fishing. The sheep will always follow the heard, the fish will avoid the heard when it gets too big.

The moral of the story is avoid the heard. You have to look a little harder for fish, but when you find them, they'll be bigger than the ones under the heard.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

It is what it is, a metro lake and it's going to get pounded internet or not. Not being a wise guy(not sure where that came from)? but that's what fishing has become in these times, lots of people and they usually follow the crowd. And if you look at some of the other posts , it's not just these lakes that this happens to.
Best bet, fish it early in the season and late in the season.

I was out earlier, the slush was bad out about 100 yds from the old waterworks bar but once you got past the big mess it wasn't too bad walking. Yes, I also saw 2 vehicles out on Peltier, hope they made it off ok.

Does anyone ever catch catfish on Peltier? What do you use to catch them?

Completely forgot about the tournament today, so went to peltier instead. Wow, what a waste of such a nice day! I probably fished about 20 holes from the north, south, and middle of the small group out on the lake. Not only did I get skunked, but I didn't even mark a fish! Nobody else stayed in the same spot for very long either.

So nobody ever cathes catfish out of Peltier? If so, what were you using?

Wow Peltier was a bust today; put a lot of fish on the camera: mostly sunnies, one slab croppie, and a bunch of northerns... but the fish were COMPLETELY disinterested today!!! I was out for 4 1/2 hrs and although I had fish swimming by, I did not have one sunny even come up to my waxie, they just swam by like it was invisible! the northerns came and looked at my sucker, but no dice either... very strange day to say the least. ALL the fish I put on camera were just about 1 foot under the ice; due to the warm temps i take it...I saw 0 fish on the bottom

That lake got really tough the last few weeks. You'll see fish, but they have no interest in eating. I'll get one or two to bite, but it's nothing worth going for. It's just February fishing at it's worst.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

Peltier has had very tightlipped fish all winter, but this weekend was ridiculous- I've never seen fish so oblivious to bait, it's like they were all hypnoitized!

Went out to Centerville around 330 today and there was a lot of water on the landing by the old bar and the 'roads' had maybe 2 inches of water on them. I drove to the south side and caught some pumpkinseeds from about 4 to 5 or so but there was no size to them. There was a pretty steady stream of water running down my hole. The guys with the perms may have a bit of chiseling to do once things tighten up again.

Drove by the last weekend and saw very few houses out on Peltier... MY guess is that the oxygen is so low right now that the fish have shut off..hence no fishermen...anyone been out here in the last week? ...I'm guessing Peltier is just done until things start to warm up

I ve been on peltier a few times and it's been slow. I did well last year in Febuary and March. The fishing this year on Peltier has been slow.
Morning bite has been the best for crappies while gills have been better close to sunset.

I was on it most of the morning. Drilled at least 50 holes and did not mark a single fish on my flasher. I noticed at the boat launch there are postings of aeration being done. Went on the centerville side and found a bunch of dink crappie and sunfish.

I drove out to peltier sat. and a guy told me at the boat launch not to waste my time out there, he said it froze out. He said someone he knew had dead fish comming up his spear hole a couple weeks ago. So I went to
Centerville and caught really small crappies and sunfish.

That is too bad. The DNR put some nice pan fish in there from Pelican in Wright county. Early winter saw a bunch of bulls and monster Crappie on the camera and did real well out there in fall. Guess the aerator system is a day late and a dollar short. What a waste

You let nature take it's course. I doubt every fish died. Plus, it's connected to centerville, so they'll be back...and hopefully after a few years BIGGER!!! smile

I checked out the DNR map of Peltier and was surprised to see how shallow large parts of the lake are. There is a decent size hole that is up to 16 feet deep and I wonder if that's not where a lot of the fish are now. I know the dam lets water out but when looking at Google Maps I can't see a way for the water to enter the lake. Any idea where the water comes from? Is there water going over the dam now?

I guess I'd be surprised if it was a total freeze out.

Tom, it's part of the rice creek chain i believe... the creek enters on the north end. When I drove by on sunday there was open water below the dam in that little channel to George Watch... could not look close enough to see if the water was going over the dam though.

Rice creek enters from the east side of the lake. There is a small undeveloped area with alot of cattails along the shore and that is where the creek runs in.

Thanks for the direction. I looked at it again and it seems pretty clear that there's a lot of area that drains into the lake. Given the significant melt from a couple of weeks ago and the area that drains in I think there has to be an awful lot of water going through Peltier. I was out on Centerville on Feb 14 and there had to be at least 2 inches of water on top of the ice. That water is all got a decent amount of oxygen in it and I would expect that Peltier is about the same.

I'm not sure the DNR does a whole lot of checking on oxygen levels. If you look at their website for the liberalized fishing list you'll see it is way out of date.

The oxygen issue seems to me to be complex and not a whole lot of data on it. To get decent readings I would think you'd have to check pretty often and at various points and depths in a body of water.

The TMDL study for Bald Eagle is available and there is data in the study on pages 57-60 about the dissolved oxygen in the lake for 10 years. The info shows measurements by depth. I've looked at it and I am hard pressed to come up with any pattern. It makes me think that a lot of info we get is pretty minimal. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Petier is a very weedy lake, with the thick ice and alot of snowcover this year there is a good chance that all those weeds died, then they rot and fill the water with noxious gasses. The water currently smells like a sewer, and the fish are all stacked up by the dam trying to get oxegen. I guess the DNR and the local sheriff are out there surveying things today. This is a major bummer, 10 years ago nobody even fished this lake, it was full of big crappies and sunfish, then it was hit pretty hard but it still sustained good populations of good sized panfish, it sucks having such a good pannie lake die, but who knows, maybe it comes back even stronger in a few years. R.I.P. fishies.

If you dont try, you will never succeed

Most of these Rice Creek Chain lakes are just a few feet deep and experience significant winterkill every year. (The lake shores are covered w/ dead rotting fish every spring)...I would imagine this is normal for Peltier as well??? Anyone know? A good example of this is Reshnau... Reshnau had Significant winterkill last year, and sported some decent northern fishing this summer. (didn't try pannies at all)

When I was out there I drilled a bunch of holes toward the North East side of the lake. Holes ranged from three feet of water to 14 ft of water. The holes I drilled in 3 ft green weeds came out of the hole when I was drilling. I did not try and smell any of the water but sure did not smell sewer when I was de slushing the holes. Seems to me if there are green weeds there is still oxygen there. Did not mark any fish anywhere. I was at the landing going from shallow to deep and nada on the fish sitings.

If it gets low in oxygen they can just fire up the aerator on the west side of the lake. Their is alot of mill-foil on the north end of the lake.

Outdoor News has listed Peltier as a good place to catch panfish for two weeks in a row. How come some reports lead to the conclusion that it's been winter killed and yet it makes the paper?

Blue Ribbon bait and tackle says that Centerville and Peltier a good places to fish almost weekly in the outdoor news, I don't know that I'd give that report to much weight. It seems to be their default lakes when the are asked to report.

I would agree as well, nothing against these guys, but I don't know how much credit I would give there report(s). I asked one guy if Jane had frozen up back in early ice and he said solid 6-8 inches on the lake, I get to the lake and there's still open water, take it some parts were frozen but there was a big hole in the middle of the lake...

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Peltier hasn't had a person on it in weeks that I've seen. The lake smells like sewage where it runs out of the dam. I wouldn't put a whole lot of faith in that report.

Centerville however is a great place to catch hundreds of panfish...hundreds of 4" panfish.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

I see that in this weeks issue you can go out on Peltier and catch crappies and perch from the afforementioned source. I wish they'd give it a rest! I do know they are pretty decent guys but it makes me wonder if they aren't steering people away from their local lakes. I guess in a way I could give the same report on Forest every week. The fish are biting, keepers may be far and few between with regards to panfish, pike are alwyas willing, walleyes harder to find but they're around and the bass are always biting(open season only please) in the summer months. Muskies are out there and usually are biting somewhere on the lake grin I think they may be trying to take the focus off of White bear, Bald Eagle ect. in an effort to get people to fish other lakes. Just a thought. Oh yeah, where did Josh catch the state record tiger muskie, might want to poke around over that way as well.

I was out with a buddy two weeks ago. Noticed there was nobody else on the lake...Now we go to the spots that we have caught fish before and right out from the landing, in the bay where you can watch the cops pull speeders over left and right, we drilled 50 holes accross 300 yds in that basin. we hole hopped each hole and then some that were there from others the days before. WE MARKED 2 FISH with no biters(They had to be fish as they slowly moved out of the cone of the ducer). Something is definitely wrong at Pelteir. Low oxygen levels? very strange...as just as we got hit with that first 12-15 inches of snow months before, we caught all the fish we wanted in those same spots.
Try a different lake if you want to catch a fish.

Hi!

I was out on Peltier Wednesday last week, walked straight out from the launch (still 18" ice) to the middle where there were many holes drilled, 11-13 FOW.

Unfortunately all I got was a sunburn- I marked 2 fish in 3 hours (granted it was noon- 3)and I walked all over the place, trying different holes. I did have some success there earlier this year, but they must have moved.

Take a big whiff of the water coming out of the dam. That lake smells like it killed this year. We'll find out when the ice comes off and the shoreline is covered with dead crappies/sunnies/bass.

Walked 100' of shoreline on Peltier just a few minutes ago.

~50 dead sunfish, mostly small ones.

~10 dead catfish, between 10-15 lbs each

~10 dead bass, a couple that were 18"+

No dead crappies, no dead pike, no dead perch. Looks like a partial kill.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

Not much in the way of traffic on that lake yet. I've seen maybe 5 boats out there since ice out.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

Went there yesterday late afternoon, a lot of fishermen out there going after pikes, crowded at the dam, a lot of sunnies action on crawlers. Didn't catch any sunnies, crappies nor bullheads on gulp or plastics. Caught and release a small pike on a bucktail.

Went out on Christmas eve from 1 pm to 430pm and caught some good size perches and one sunny with my dad. Didn't get any crappies probably because of it being too sunny. Didn't stay for the night bit but I'm sure the crappies were there for the night bite. About 7" of ice.
