Probably going to target Pike this weekend since I can never get the walleyes to cooperate.

Hows the bite been so far?

Fished the Trap on opener and only managed 2 northerns before having boat trouble. A couple of other boats had a couple of eye's and a few northerns.
Most of the northerns came from the east end of the lake in 12-15 ft of water along the weed edge. All the walleyes came off of the sunken island, not sure on the depth.

I heard the crappies had been biting the week leading to the opener, but I had no luck over the weekend. Maybe due to the cool weather. I will be back there this weekend to try again.

we had decent luck on crappies (even managed to catch a 27" bowfin on the slip bobber)...terrible luck on pike and walleyes. Had a good size muskie snap at my spoon boatside but other than that nothing.

I've never really had a lot of luck with walleyes on fish trap, but when guys fish the sunken island, are they just jigging? I've done mostly trolling when I've gone out. But like I say, never much luck.

Minnows and a pink jig. Fished the shore line right along the penninsula dead east of the big island.

What's the water temp up there on either of the 3 lakes (Sham, Alex, Trap)?

Was on Fish trap monday and water temps were 59-61 on main lake and up 64 in the KOA.
Most guys fishing the island are anchoring and fan casting lindy rigged spot tail shiners with a really slow retrieve.
On monday the KOA was really good for crappies in about 6-9 feet of water, casting 1/16th oz flu-flu tipped with a crappie minnow or or fishing the same under a bobber.
The lake is extremly clear this spring with visability nearly 15 ft, so stealth is very important for crappies and walleye as most walleyes I have caught have been in 14-15ft or 21-25 on busy days.

Wow, thanks for all the info guys. I'd love to find the crappies, I've had my best luck with them in KOA, but that was a few years back (it was flu-flu's then too). I was out there on opener, but it was really busy, and no bites, confirming what you said anyfish. My best luck with the walleyes has always been before sunrise.

I'll try that pink jig too. Low- have you had much luck with any good size pike on fishtrap lately? Has the slot helped at all do you think? I still seem to get a lot of snakes.

lots of small ones...havent seen anything caught over 25"

on the other hand last year I did see a monster sized pike/muskie sitting in the weeds as we were trolling in that same bay. Threw everything in front of him and he wanted none of it. frown

There has always been a few big pike in the lake, but no I am not seeing a change in the size structure yet, still mostly under 20 in. The regs are still quiet young though, it may take more time. Plus for me numbers of fish caught have never been good on Fish Trap.

Many years ago there used to big pike in Fish Trap and Alex. But just like anything else people were keeping to many of the big ones. Now that the slot limits is in place the fish will be getting bigger every year its in place!! Another thing that will help A LOT is the muskies. They will help take care of a lot of those hammer handles, and leave the bigger ones alone!!

For example: Lake Sallie by Detroit Lakes was one of the 1st lakes to got to the slot for northerns. It is not stocked with muskies but they are in there. Since then the northerns have gotten to be a good size but it took time. We catch a lot of high 30 inch pike and there are 40 some inchers in there too. We dont catch a lot of hammer handles.

So hopefully in 10 years down the road Fish Trap will be back to what it used to be!!

Phunny,
fish Alex last night and had water temps at 57 degrees on main lake. Caught 4 walleyes in 17 ft of water, great fishing for how my luck is on that lake usually.

Thanks for the update Brian! I'm sure the sun and warmer temps this weekend will gradually warm it up even more. Looking forward to getting on the water again!

I hope you're right Brian, that would be great to see some bigger pike anytime. Even better if it helps the fish #'s overall too. Good luck fishing this weekend guys, I'll report back.

Still haven't seen a muskie in fish trap. Are there enough in it that people are targeting them yet?

I have targeted them but have not caught any. Ive seen more dead at the access from walleye guys killing them then I have seen in the lake!! My parents have a cabin on the north side so Ive been on the lake my whole life and I havent seen very many but they are there for sure!! A lot of the muskies are being killed on Alex and Fish trap!! I turned a guy in 2 years ago that was shooting muskies off the end of his dock!!

You probably would have better chance of catching a smallmouth in Fish Trap then a muskie. Anybody ever catch in smallies out there???

fishon, I was off the islands.

I have seen one muskie caught on fish trap, it was 47in and was caught off the bullrush island on the northend. Only have caught one smallmouth on the Trap.

Brian, yes a couple of smallies on fishtrap, last year, the first two I've ever caught there.

I didn't have much luck over the holiday weekend. It was busy, and I had limited time on the water. 1 crappie, 1 rock bass, 1 walleye. Nothing really predictible. I didn't try KOA bay for crappies, although I wish I would have.

Agreed also, the water is even clearer than normal, I can certainly see bottom in 12+ feet of water, without weeds for cover, I'm sure the fish spook easy. I did see a couple of small schools of small crappies, couldn't hook em though.
