Can you fish for smallies at Montissippi during the winter months or is there a closed season for them now.
Also does that part of the river stay open through the winter?

Thanks

You can use whatever you wish, live or artificial. The gamefish season is still open till the end of Feb. so if you get a walleye you have the choice of keeping it, but the Smallies are catch and release only. Then after the game fish season closes you can still fish there but you better make it very obvious to a CO that your fishing for cats!

I don't think smallies are capable of growing that big in the river...they burn too much energy living in that current.

An 18" smallie on mille lacs or the boundary waters could run about 4.5 lbs, but on the 'sippi that bass will only weigh about 3 lbs.

I have never seen a 18.5" 4.5lber.... the average 18"er on the river weighs 2.5 to just under 3lbs, I have scaled alot of smallies in the past 3 years and I have seen 1 over 5 it was 5.1 lbs 19.99999" opening day 3 years ago, still full of spawn and fat as ...well you get the idea. To fat to jump.

Agreed, questionable for sure. After the power plant shutdown you could walk the banks and pick up dozens of dead 18-20" smallies but I did not see anything over 20.5", and I saw hundreds of dead fish. Fish have come back but not nearly the numbers, nor the size. These fish should likely be left alone for a few years to allow them to reach the size of reproduction. That 2 mile river stretch is usually flush with anglers and I am not sure why. You can catch fish on anything tied to a hook, and I do mean anything. No skill required but gets boring real fast.

I wonder what was used to measure the fish?

I could be mistaken, but isn't the river open all year for catch and release.

NO, the river there is not open all year to catch and release fishing. Regular rules apply plus the additional limitation of all smallies 12-20" much be released.

Only Pool 2 is open to C&R all year walleye sauger SMB and LMB.

But don't take my word for it (or anyone's on the internet), read the rules.
