I would spend some time in the current that time of year. Both below Pipestone Falls, and on the north end of the bay at the beginning of Gooseneck Narrows.

I always like crawlers - seem they'll work late into the fall. However, by that time they may be homing in on minnows again, and on that trip, it's not too difficult to get minnows in safely.

Other place to try as well that time of year would be

The entrance to Hidden Bay, there is a small cut there with current running year round. It can be a dynamite spot during spring and winter.

Anywhere where there is current and cuts. Channels, etc. A great place to start would be Louis Narrows.

If you really want an adventure make your way into Jackfish for the day, and fish some of the structure on that part of the lake. I have grown to love Jackfish and it has produced for us alot.

Also when fishing the Pipestone Falls one of the best way and close to snag free way to fish would be a red hook, or a plain hook and a red bead, with a split shot about three-four feet above the hook. If you don't mind losing some split shots, that seems to be the best way because usually your split shot snags and that pulls right off. We will anchor up in there and cast that way, or throw out slip bobbers. Watch out for the Northerns! smile

Let us know how you do.

Just got back from Basswood on Sat and fished near where you are going. We did real well with spinners attached to bottom bouncers and minnows or plain hooks with minnows.

chaffmj,
where in basswood did you go?
my dad, my brother and i went into basswood and fished back bay,
wind bay, u.s. point, and someother "secert" locations.
We slaughtered the crappies and they were all 13-17 inches and we caught maybe 25 of them

(sorry to highjack the post for a second)...

Young Fisher Guy,
can you email me? I'm heading up to Basswood in two weeks and have been trying for crappies for years with no luck. Will trade a few of our spots on Basswood for Walleye & Pike for crappie spots. stegich@msn.com

Thanks

Young Fisher Guy,
We stayed in the motor section of Pipestone and Jackfish Bays and had excellent fishing for the 4 days we were there. Lots of walleyes, some big smallies, a few jumbo perch, northerns of all sizes though none were monsters and one lone crappie. I'm going to post some more pictures and a trip report later.
